Volume Weight Calculator
This article explains volumetric weight, how it affects shipping costs, and how to activate and use the calculator.
What is volume weight?
Volume weight is a calculated weight based on how much space a package occupies.
Shipping costs are always calculated using the highest value of:
- actual weight (kg)
- volume weight (kg)
Large but lightweight products often have a higher volume weight than their actual weight.
How to activate the volume weight calculator
- Go to Extensions → Your extensions
- Search for Volume weight
- Click +Install extension
How to use the volume weight calculator
- Go to Products → Products
- Find the relevant product
- Click Edit
- In the Miscellaneous tab, click Volume weight
- Enter the package:
- length (cm)
- width (cm)
- height (cm)
- Read the calculated volume weight (kg)
- Click Add volume weight if the volume weight is higher than the actual weight
Always use the measurements of the packaging that will actually be shipped.
How volume weight is calculated
Volume weight is calculated as:
(L × W × H) / Volumetric factor
- Measurements must be entered in centimeters (cm)
- The volumetric factor is defined by the carrier
- The volumetric factor may vary depending on transport type
Example
- Dimensions: 50 × 40 × 30 cm
- Actual weight: 2 kg
- Volumetric factor: 5000
Calculation:
(50 × 40 × 30) / 5000 = 12 kg
Shipping will be calculated based on 12 kg because the volume weight is higher than the actual weight.
Important to know
- The highest weight is always used in the shipping calculation.
- Incorrect weight may result in incorrect shipping costs.
- The volumetric factor is determined by the carrier.
- Large and lightweight products often have high volume weight.
Troubleshooting
Problem: Shipping cost is higher than expected
Cause: The product has a high volume weight
Solution: Verify the packaging dimensions and recalculate the volume weight
What if this does not solve the issue?
- Go to Configuration → General → Shipping / Packing
- Check the field Weight per parcel
- Adjust the limit if the order is split into multiple parcels
If the issue persists, contact customer support and include:
- product name or SKU
- packaging dimensions (L × W × H)
- actual product weight
- carrier/shipping method
- order number (if related to a specific order)
