To ensure accurate shipping cost calculations, it's essential that your online store products have the correct weight. The higher value between the actual weight and the volumetric weight will always be used for calculation. It's especially important to calculate the volumetric weight for light products with a large volume and enter it as the product's weight in the control panel. The volumetric weight calculator automatically calculates this for you when you enter the packaging dimensions.

Enter the physical dimensions (width, length, height) of the product to be shipped, and the calculator will immediately calculate the volumetric weight.

Why is volumetric weight used?

Carriers have limited space in their trucks, airplanes, and other means of transport. Even if a package is light in actual weight, it can take up a lot of space. Volumetric weight ensures that the transport company is compensated for the space the package occupies, in addition to the actual weight. This is particularly relevant for light and large shipments.

How is volumetric weight calculated?

The formula for calculating volumetric weight is usually:

(Length x Width x Height) / Volume Factor

  • The dimensions (length, width, height) are usually given in centimeters (cm) or inches.
  • The volume factor is a number that the transport company determines. This factor may vary between different companies and types of transport (e.g., air freight often has a higher factor than road transport).

Example:
Let's say you send a light box with the dimensions 50 cm x 40 cm x 30 cm. The actual weight is 2 kg. If the transport company's volume factor is 5000, the volumetric weight is calculated as follows:

(50 cm x 40 cm x 30 cm) / 5000 = 60000 cm³ / 5000 = 12 kg

In this case, the volumetric weight (12 kg) is higher than the actual weight (2 kg). Therefore, the shipping cost will be calculated based on 12 kg.
