Popup in the webshop
What is a popup and how is it created?
Most people know what a popup is. In the context of Personalized Shopping, it is a box that pops up to perform a specific action. For example, it could be to leave an email address for use in a newsletter in exchange for a discount code, or to promote an ongoing competition.
When you create a popup, you can choose what the popup should ask for, when it should be displayed, and how it should look. You can choose the colors, images, and text yourself.
Consent
A popup's most important function is to obtain consent to send out marketing emails. This is important both for your business and for the other features in Personalized Shopping, as the email address is used to identify customers so that we can recognize them when they return. The sooner we can get the email address, the sooner we can send them a "forgotten shopping cart" email or personalized emails.
How to create a popup
A popup is perhaps the most effective way to get customers to sign up for newsletters. Personalized Shopping gives you the option to generate a discount code that is unique to each customer who chooses to sign up for your newsletter via a popup.
Here's a brief description of how to create a popup:
Follow the guide below for a step-by-step walkthrough:
Step 1: Click on Popups > Plus sign in the Personalized Shopping control panel
Step 2: Choose the purpose of the popup
- E-mail collection: This collects email addresses which can be used for later marketing. Often combined with a welcome discount.
- Promotions: This can be used to give messages that link to a page. Perfect to send customers to a landing page to sign up for the customer club.
- Discounts: This gives a discount code to the customer without requiring an email address.
Step 3: Choose how the popup should appear
In most cases, a normal popup is sufficient.
Step 4: Choose which template you want to use as a starting point
Step 5: Personalize the popup.
Different Types of Popup
A popup can be displayed in three different states. These are Minimized, Maximized and Success. You can easily switch between the different views by clicking on the buttons shown in the image below.
- Minimized: This is displayed when the popup is in a minimized state. The customer can click on it to open the popup in "Maximized" state.
- Maximized: In this state, the main content of the popup is displayed.
- Success: This page is displayed when the customer has completed an action. This could be, for example, if the customer signs up for the newsletter.
Popup Content
You can easily personalize the content of a popup by clicking on the element you want to change. By clicking on the various elements in the preview of the popup, you have the opportunity to personalize colors, text, etc. The video at the top also goes through the process of personalization.
Add a discount code to the popup
Tempting customers with a discount code can be very effective in getting them to sign up for newsletters. If you want to give a discount code as a reward after someone has signed up for the newsletter, you can click on Add discount in the top line. Here you can create a new discount code or choose an existing discount code. Learn how to create a discount code ➡
After you have selected a discount code, you will see a blue frame. Copy the text "@@DISCOUNT-XX@@" as we need it later in the process. Close the window by clicking on Close window.
The discount code is then entered in the field for Success. Enter the desired text that the customer receives when they have signed up for the newsletter, then copy the discount code into the text field.
Connect the Popup to Your Newsletter Provider
In order for you to use the emails of those who sign up for the popup for newsletters, you must connect the popup to your newsletter provider. This is done by editing the popup and selecting Settings > Newsletter integration.
To connect the popup to a provider, an integration must first be set up between Personalized Shopping and your provider (e.g., MailChimp or MailMojo).
Test the popup in the online store
By following these steps, you can test the popup by visiting a special address in your online store. Once you are satisfied with the result, you can remove the rule and save the popup so that it works as normal for your customers.
Add Rule
- Open the popup you want to edit.
- Click on "Settings" and then "Who".
- Select "Add new rule".
- In the new window that appears, find the "Address" option and click "Select".
Customize the Rule

- Click "Click here to add address", remove any existing text, and paste the address "www.acendy.no/?testpopup".
- Press "Enter" on the keyboard to confirm.

- Click on the cross (x) next to the rule you created.

Save and Publish the Popup
To save, click on Save and continue in the upper right corner. Here you will get some new choices that you make a decision on before the popup can be published.
- Name - Give the popup a description so that you can easily keep track of it. This is not visible to the customer.
- Position - Where on the website should the popup be placed.
- Who - Who should see the popup.
- When - When should the popup be displayed.
- If this popup collects email addresses, you will have a choice about "Newsletter integration". Here you can choose which list the emails should be transferred to. This requires that you have installed an app that supports this.
- Popup status - Should the popup be activated or deactivated.
- Once you have been through this guide, finish by clicking on Save.
Send Email to Customers Who Sign Up for the Popup
When a customer has signed up for a newsletter via a popup, it is often because you have offered a discount code upon registration. We recommend sending this discount code by email, as this ensures that the customer actually leaves their real email address.
How to Show the Popup a Certain Number of Times per Day
- Edit the popup you want to show X times per day.
- Select Settings > When > Add new rule
- In the list, find "Display pr day", press Select
- Click on "∞" in the text "Display ∞ times to the same visitor pr day.", and enter the number of times per day.
