Stock Status and Stock Rules

This article explains how to manage stock status and stock rules in your online store. You will learn how to control the handling of out-of-stock products, pre-orders, and stock settings.

Where can I find the stock settings?

Go to:
Control Panel → Configuration → General → Stock status

Here you can configure how stock is handled in your online store.

Configure stock rules

In the stock settings, you can control how the system handles products that are out of stock.

Examples of settings include:

  • deactivating products when the stock reaches zero
  • allowing customers to purchase out-of-stock products (overselling)
  • determining how stock status is displayed to customers

Changes are saved by clicking Save changes.

Pre-order products

You can allow customers to pre-order products that are not currently in stock.

This is configured per product.

  1. Go to Products → Products
  2. Open the product you want to edit
  3. Locate the stock settings
  4. Enable pre-order
  5. Click Save

When this is enabled, customers can order the product even if the stock level is 0.

Advanced stock management

For more control over stock status, the Advanced stock management extension is recommended.

This extension allows you to:

  • display custom stock messages
  • manage overselling with more detailed rules
  • automatically deactivate products when stock reaches zero

You can find the extension here:
Extensions → Your extensions

Back-in-stock email notifications

You can also allow customers to receive notifications when out-of-stock products are available again.

This is done using the Back-in-stock email notification extension.

With this feature, customers can:

  • register their email address on out-of-stock products
  • receive an automatic notification when the product becomes available again

You can find the extension here:
Extensions → Your extensions

Important to know

  • Stock settings apply to the entire online store
  • Pre-orders are configured per product
  • Advanced stock rules require a separate extension
  • Back-in-stock notifications require a separate extension

What if this does not solve the problem?

  • Verify the stock settings under Stock status
  • Check that the product has the correct stock settings
  • Test the product in your online store
  • Contact Mystore support if the stock status is not displayed correctly

Please include:

  • The product name or product ID
  • A screenshot of the stock settings
  • The domain name of your online store.
