Discount Center: Discount codes
A discount code is a code the customer types in at checkout to get money off. It's the most flexible discount type: you control the value, what it applies to, how many times it can be used, and who's allowed to use it.
Creating a code
When you create a discount and choose the Discount code type, you set:
- Name — internal only, never shown to customers.
- Code — what the customer enters at checkout. Letters, numbers, hyphens and underscores only. Click Generate for a random code, or type your own. The form checks availability as you type and warns you if the code is already in use.
- Discount value — either a percentage off or a fixed amount in kroner.
Codes are not case-sensitive at checkout. A customer entering summer, SUMMER, or Summer all match the same code.
Setting the value
A code gives one of two things:
- Percentage — a percent off the order or the eligible products (for example 20% off).
- Fixed amount — a set number of kroner off (for example 100 kr off).
You can change the value any time from the Settings card on the detail page using the pencil icon in the header.
Usage limits
By default a code can be used an unlimited number of times. To cap it, open the Conditions card and set a usage limit. Once the code has been redeemed that many times across all customers, it stops working.
The detail page shows usage as either "Used 12 times" (no limit) or "Used 12 of 100 times" (with a limit), so you always know where a code stands.
To restrict a code to a single customer instead of a total count, use Connected account under Conditions
Gift cards
A gift-card code works differently from a normal code. Instead of being used up after one order, it keeps a running balance. When a customer spends less than the card's value, the remainder stays on the code for next time.
The dashboard tracks gift cards separately, showing how many still have a balance and the total amount outstanding across all of them. This is the money your store still owes against issued gift cards.
What a code applies to
By default a code applies to all products. You can narrow it to specific products, categories, manufacturers, or shipping only. This is set up under Targeting on the detail page, and you can also exclude products that should never get the discount even if they'd otherwise qualify. See Choosing which products a discount applies to.
Conditions worth knowing
Codes support a range of checkout conditions — minimum order value, free shipping, whether the code combines with other discounts, whether it applies to sale items, and locking it to a specific customer or customer group.
Seeing how a code performed
Click the Used N times figure on a code's detail page to open its usage report. It lists every order the code applied to, with totals for revenue, discount given, and margin, and you can export it.
Tips
- Generate random codes when you're handing them out individually (for example one per customer) so they can't be guessed or shared.
- Need a lot of similar codes at once? Use the code duplicator instead of creating them by hand. See Importing and duplicating codes.
- Got codes from an external source (a partner campaign, a printed batch)? Use Import codes to bring them in. Same article.
