Email templates: Welcome to the customer club
ℹ️ Requires Plus
This feature requires the Plus package.
The email that customers receive when they join your customer club. You create it in the email builder, and you can attach a personal discount code that only that customer can use.
What it does
When a customer joins the customer club from the online store, the store sends this email. If you have turned on discount codes, each new member receives their own code. The code is a copy of a discount code you have created in Discount Center, and it can be used once.
The template is available when the customer club is active and the store has Plus. The email is sent when the customer joins in the online store.
How to set it up
Four steps, in this order. Customers will not receive any email until the last step.
1. Create the discount code to be copied
Go to Products › Sales Tools › Discount Center › Discount Codes and create a regular discount code, for example CLUB. This is the code members get a copy of. Read more in Discount Center: Discount Codes
The copy gets the same value and conditions as your code, for example customer group, minimum order amount, and which products it applies to. Set up the original how you want the members' codes to work.
If you do not want to send a discount code, skip this step and turn off the discount code in step 3.
2. Install the template
1. Go to Settings › Email › Templates
2. Click Add template at the top right.
3. Find Welcome to the customer club and click Install
The template will appear as a card in the template list. It starts as a draft and is turned off.
If you cannot find the template in the list, the customer club is not active, or the store does not have Plus.
3. Select discount code
Open the settings under Discount code on the card:
Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
Send a discount code | On or off. If on, each new member receives a personal code. If off, the store sends the email without a code. |
Discount code to copy | The code from the Discount Center from which each member code is copied. You must select an existing code. |
Valid for (hours) | How long the member's code is active. The default is 720 hours, which is 30 days. 0 means the code never expires. |
Click Save
If you lack a discount code to copy, the card marked Rule not specified is displayed, and you cannot turn on the template. Select a code, or turn off Send a discount code
4. Edit, publish, and turn on
Open the template in the builder using the pencil icon on the card. The standard design has a logo, a greeting, the code in large font, a Log in button, and a closing. Adjust text, colors, and images, and click Save and publish
Then turn on the switch Activate this add-on template on the card. From then on, new members will receive the email.

The code in the email
The code is inserted where you have the placeholder [CODE]! The standard design has it in the middle of the email, in large font.
The placeholder and the setting must match. The card warns you if they do not:
- The discount code is on, but the published template is missing [CODE]! Members will not see their code. Add [CODE] in the builder and publish.
- The discount code is off, but the template still has [CODE]! The space will be empty. Remove the placeholder and publish.
The warning checks all the language versions you have published.
Variables
The menu Use variable in the builder has these placeholders for this template:
Variable | Becomes |
|---|---|
[CODE] | The member's one-time discount code |
[ACCOUNT_URL] | Link to the customer's account page |
[CUSTOMER_FIRST_NAME], [CUSTOMER_LAST_NAME] | Customer's first and last name |
[CUSTOMER_EMAIL] | Customer's email address |
Store details | Store name, logo, address, postal city, organization number, email and website address |
There are no order or product variables. The email does not belong to an order. Read more in Email templates: Template variables
When the email is sent
- When a new customer creates an account and joins the customer club.
- When an existing customer joins, from their account or upon login.
Each member receives one email and one code per signup. If the customer is already a member, the customer receives no new code. If the customer cancels and joins again, a new email with a new code will arrive.
The subject line is "Welcome to the customer club at [STORE_NAME]" until you change it. If the template is empty or missing for the customer's language, the store sends a simple standard email with the code instead. Read more about languages in Email templates: Languages and translations
If sending of email is stopped for the store, nothing is sent.

Avoid two emails to the same customer
Other features can also send emails or codes to new members. The card shows a warning for each one that is on:
The warning applies to | What happens | What you do |
|---|---|---|
Klaviyo | The Klaviyo discount for membership is on, so the member receives an extra code from there. | Turn off one of the two. |
The regular welcome email | A customer joining during account creation also gets the welcome email from the system. | Turn on Deactivate welcome email for new customers in Customers › Customer club › SettingsCrall |
The Crall welcome email is sent in addition, with an extra code. | Turn off one of the two. |
Turn off or uninstall
Turn off the toggle on the card to stop sending the email. Discount settings remain. If you uninstall the template, the settings will also be removed.
Tips
- Create the code first. You cannot turn on the template before you have selected a discount code, or turned off the code.
- Use a clear code. The name of the original code is not shown to members, so choose a name you recognize in Discount Center.
- Set an expiration time. A code that never expires stays in the inbox for years. Thirty days is a good starting point.
- Test with a new email address. Join your own online store and check that the email, code, and link work.
- Publish after each change. The toggle determines whether the template is sent. Publishing determines which version goes out.
