Tips for good product images

This article provides concrete guidelines on how you should use product images in your online store for the best possible presentation, fast loading times, and increased sales.

Why are good product images important?

Product images are often the first thing a customer notices. Clear, professional images:

  • build trust
  • make purchasing decisions easier
  • increase conversion rates

In short: good images sell better than poor ones.

  • Recommended resolution: 1200 × 1200 pixels
  • Provides sharp images even when zoomed
  • Suitable for most designs and screens

Tip: Avoid images that are too small – they cannot be «improved» without quality degradation.

What are pixels?

An image consists of small color dots/color boxes (pixels).
The more pixels, the higher the level of detail.

Example:

  • 1200 × 1200 pixels = 1200 pixels in height and width
  • More pixels → better quality when enlarged

Different image sizes – what's important?

The images do not have to have the same dimensions, but they should have the same aspect ratio.

Examples of similar aspect ratios:

  • 200 × 600
  • 600 × 1800
  • 750 × 2250

This provides a neat and professional look in the product list.

How to crop images to the correct format?

You can easily crop images so that they are as tall as they are wide (1:1).

Most computers have simple image editing programs (like Paint on PC or iPhoto on Mac) for cropping. For more advanced features, you can use programs like Canva or PicMonkey.

File size and load time

Yes – file size affects the loading time of the online store.

  • Recommended file size: 30–100 kB
  • Too large images → slow online store and poor user experience
  • Use image compression before uploading

Which image format should I use?

  • JPEG: Recommended
    • Good quality
    • Low file size
  • PNG: Should be avoided
    • Larger files
    • Slower loading time

Feel free to use the Save for Web function in image editing programs.

My images are small and unclear

This is usually due to low original quality.

Solution:

  • Use high-resolution original images
  • Contact the supplier for images optimized for web use

Small images cannot be scaled up without loss of quality.

How many product images can I upload?

  • Up to 8 images per product
  • Show:
    • different angles
    • details
    • usage situation (if relevant)
  • Place the best image first – it is often used as the main image

Why are images rotated incorrectly in the online store?

This is due to metadata (EXIF-data) in the image.
Some cameras store rotation information instead of actually rotating the pixels, which can be interpreted differently by browsers.

Use an image editing program that actually rotates the image and updates the metadata.

To ensure correct rotation, the image must be processed in an image editing program like GIMP (free) or Photoshop. This rotates the pixels and updates the metadata.

Example: GIMP (free)

  1. Install and open GIMP
  2. Open the image (File → Open)
  3. If you are asked about EXIF rotation select Rotate
  4. Export the image (File → Export As)
  5. Choose filename and format (JPEG recommended)

The image is now correctly rotated and ready for upload.

If the image is still incorrect:

  • Go to Image → Transform → Rotate 90° (as needed)
  • Save and re-upload

Use square images (1:1), 1200 × 1200 px, JPEG format and compressed files → because it provides faster loading times, better visual consistency, and higher conversion.
