How to create a new category
This article explains how to create a new category in your online store and how categories are used to structure your products in a clear and organized way. Categories make it easier for customers to find products and improve the overall structure of your store.
What is a category?
A category is used to group and organize related products, for example by type, use case, or target audience.
A product can belong to one or multiple categories at the same time.
How to create a new category
- Go to Products → Products in the control panel
- Click + Category
- Enter:
- Category name
- Category ID (used in the URL – should not be changed later)
- Choose whether the category should be visible in the online store
- Click Create new category
Optional settings
When creating a category, you can also:
- Select a parent category (to create subcategories). Read more about Main categories and subcategories here →
- Set the order/display position in the menu
- Add an SEO title and meta description for better visibility in Google
Add products to a category
There are several ways to add products to categories:
- Directly on the product
- Via Bulk edit
- From the Product overview by clicking a product and then selecting Move
- You can also select multiple products at the same time
Important to know
- A product can belong to multiple categories at the same time
- Multiple categories can have the same name, but not the same category ID
- Categories without products can still be visible in the menu
- Changes to categories are reflected immediately in the online store
