Variant Types

Variant types determine how the customer selects or specifies a variant on the product page. This article describes the available variant types and how to use images on variants.

How to select variant type

You select the variant type when creating a variant under Products → Variants
The types are available in the "Type" dropdown in the "Add new variant" dialog

Different variant types

A standard dropdown menu with predefined values. The customer selects one option from the list.

Suitable for variants such as size, colour or model.
This is the only type that supports values, subgroups and inventory management.

Text field (small)

Displayed as a small text field on the product page where the customer can enter short text — for example a name or a short engraving.

This type has no values or settings to configure. When you click on the variant in the list, no values are shown on the right.

Text field (large)

Displayed as a "Text area" on the product page. Works like the small text field, but gives the customer a larger field for longer text.

This type also has no values or settings to configure.

Image upload

Gives the customer the option to upload their own image linked to the product — for example a design or motif for printing. Maximum file size per image is 8 MB.

This type has no settings. When you click on the variant in the list, the message "Image upload has no settings." is displayed.

Good to know

Dropdown is the default choice and the only type that supports values, subgroups and inventory management.
Text field (small), Text field (large) and Image upload have no values or settings — they are created as a variant and linked directly to the product.
Each variant on the product page shows price, price supplement and weight per customer group (e.g. End customer, VIP). Prices shown are excl. VAT.
