Handling variants on products

Add new variants and link to product

Need to divide products into sizes, colors, or other variations? Variants are the answer!

How to add variants in the control panel

  1. Open "Products" > "Variants" in your control panel.
  2. Click "Add variants"
  3. Give the variant a name, select the variant type, and choose whether the variants should be stock-managed. The default variant is "Dropdown menu". If you choose to stock-manage the variants, you will have the option to enter stock balance on the product page.
  4. Choose whether you want to use subgroups. Subgroups are smart to use if you are going to have several types of variants. The main variant can be called "Sizes", while subgroups can be "Shoes", "Dresses", "Pants", etc.
  5. Add values: Once the variant is created, you can add values to your products. You can choose to enter one value at a time, or several at the same time.

Using subgroups

Subgroups are a great way to keep track of your different variants. For example, in the variant category "Sizes," it may be helpful to add subgroups such as "Shoe Sizes," "Dresses," "Pants," etc. This helps you keep track of which products are associated with the variants.

Link variant to product

Step 1: Navigate to "Products" > "Products"
Find the product you want to add variants to

Step 2: On the product, click on the "Variants" tab
Here you can choose to add as many variants as you want

Step 3: Choose which type of variant to add
Here you choose between the variant groups you created in the previous step

Step 4: Update the product When the desired variants have been added to the product, update the product by saving the changes.

Step 5: Confirm visibility Check that the variants are displayed as desired in the online store

Follow these steps to ensure that the variants are correctly linked to your products and are visible to customers in the online store.

Stock Management Activation

Stock management is activated per variant category, giving you the ability to define stock balance for each individual variant. For example, if you choose that the variant category "Size" should have stock management and add four sizes to a product, you can then specify stock balance for each size. This way, you can keep track of which variants are sold out and prevent the sale of variants that are not in stock.

How to delete variants

Alternative 1: Delete the variant group

This can be done if you want to delete a variant group and all associated variant values.

Nb!

This is only possible if no variant values are linked to products.

Alternative 2: Delete one and one variant value
You do this by finding the variant values and pressing "X". There are two different colors on the choice to delete, learn what they mean:

  • Red ❌ = The value is not linked to a product and can be deleted.
  • Black X = The value is linked to a product and must be disconnected before it can be deleted.

If you need to remove the value from a product before deletion, you can use the bulk editor for this. See how:

Variant templates

Variant templates allow you to pre-configure sets of variants, so you can select them with a few clicks when updating a product. A good example is stores that sell clothing and always need to add size variants. With templates, you can set up a ready-made template containing all sizes and easily select it when configuring the product.

Create template

On a product page, you can manually select all the variants you want to turn into a template. Once the variants are selected, click Save, give the template a name, and confirm by clicking Save.

All variants that were selected when the template was created will now be added the next time you select the template.

Use template

Select a template from the drop-down menu.

Click Use.

All variants in the selected template will now be added to the product.

Delete existing template

If you want to delete an existing template, first select it on a product page. Then click the delete button on the right. The template will be deleted immediately.

Overwrite/update template

If you want to change/update an existing template, do the following:

Select the template you want to update, or add variants manually.

Make the desired changes.

Click Save.

In the window that opens, you must select which template to update. This is done via the drop-down menu in the lower left corner of the new window.

Then click Save to confirm the update.
