Creating New Variants and Linking Them to Products
How to create a new variant
- Go to Products → Variants in the control panel
- Click Add variant
- Fill in the "Add new variant" dialog:
- Name — Give the variant a name (e.g. "Size" or "Colour")
- Type — Select a variant type from the dropdown (default is "Dropdown"). See the article "Variant Types" for an overview.
- Use inventory management — Tick this if you want to track stock levels per variant. See the article "Inventory Management for Variants".
- Click Save
The variant now appears in the list on the left. The number next to the variant name shows how many values have been added.
How to add values
After creating a variant, you need to add values (e.g. S, M, L for size or Red, Blue, Black for colour).
- Click on the variant in the list on the left
- Click the + button to add new values
- In the "Add new value" dialog you have three methods:
Add a single value
The default view. Enter the name of the value and click Add value.
Add multiple values at once
- Click + Add multiple in the dialog
- Enter the values in the text field — one value per line
- Click Add value
All values are created at once.
Add a range (number series)
Useful for numeric variants such as shoe sizes or weight values.
- Click + Add a range in the dialog
- Fill in:
- First number — the starting value (e.g. 1)
- Step between numbers — the interval between values (e.g. 1)
- Last number — the ending value (e.g. 10)
- Prefix — optional text before the number (e.g. "Size ")
- Suffix — optional text after the number (e.g. " cm")
- Click Add value
Prefix and suffix do not add spaces automatically — you must add them yourself if needed.
For large ranges, timeouts may occur. It is recommended to add large ranges in smaller batches, e.g. 10–15 steps at a time.
Subgroups
Subgroups help you organise values within a variant when you have multiple product types that use the same variant category but with different values.
Example: The variant "Size" can have the subgroups "S,M,L", "Shoes" and "Trousers" — because these product types use different sizing systems. The subgroup "S,M,L" contains the values XS, S, M, L and XL, while "Shoes" can contain 36, 37, 38 etc.
How to create subgroups
- Click on the variant in the list on the left
- Click Use subgroups at the bottom of the page
- Enter a group name in the "Group name" field and click Add group
- Click on the subgroup to add values to it
- Use the -- Add value -- field or the + button to add values
The page now shows three columns: the variant list on the left, subgroups in the middle, and values on the right.
You can sort subgroups with Sort groups and values across subgroups with Sort master values.
How to link variants to a product
- Go to Products → Products in the control panel
- Find and open the product you want to add variants to
- Open the Variants tab on the product page
- Click the Select variant… dropdown and select the variant you want to add. The variants are grouped by type in the list.
- Click Save changes or Save changes and close
Once the variant is added, it is displayed with fields for Price, Price supplement and Weight per customer group (e.g. End customer, VIP). Prices shown are excl. VAT.
You can add as many variants as you like to each product. The link "You can edit your variants here" takes you directly to Products → Variants.
Editing a variant
- Click on the variant in the list on the left
- Click Edit in the top right
- Change the name, type or inventory management setting
- Click Save
To edit an individual value, click the pencil icon next to the value.
Sorting variants and values
You can change the order of variants in the list and of values within a variant.
- Click Sort below the variant list or below the value list
- Drag and drop the elements into the desired order
The default sort is "Normal order". The number next to the variant name shows the number of values in the variant.
Display settings
Click Display settings (the cog icon) in the top right to adjust:
- Items per page — Number of values displayed per page (default is 50)
- Remember last value — When enabled, the system remembers the last selected variant when you navigate back to the page
How to delete variants
Delete the variant group
This can be done if you want to delete a variant group and all associated variant values.
Delete one and one variant value
You do this by finding the variant values and pressing "X". There are two different colors on the choice to delete, learn what they mean:
- Red ❌ = The value is not linked to a product and can be deleted.
- Black X = The value is linked to a product and must be disconnected before it can be deleted.
Good to know
- Do not use the same variant name in multiple subgroups within the same category if you want unique sorting of the variants.
- Variants that are linked to products cannot be deleted directly (shown with a black X). The link must be removed first. See the article "Deleting Variants".
- Values that are not linked to any product are shown with a red X and can be deleted directly.
- To save time when creating many variants, you can use variant templates. See the article "Variant Templates".
