# Pay with multiple gift cards online

This article explains how you can allow customers to merge multiple gift cards into a single gift card and use it as payment at checkout. The feature makes it easier for customers to use remaining balances from several gift cards in one order.

## Who can use this feature?

This feature is available for online stores using:

-   The updated checkout in the **America** design template, or
-   The **Design Builder**

## Before you start

Before enabling the feature, make sure that:

-   The **Gift Card** extension is updated to the latest version.

## How to enable gift card merging

1.  Go to **Extensions → Your extensions** in the control panel
2.  Find **Gift Card** and update the extension if needed
3.  Open the gift card settings
4.  Enable **Allow merging of gift cards in checkout**
5.  Save the changes

## How it works for the customer

When the feature is enabled, customers will see a new option under gift cards in the checkout.

The customer can:

-   Add multiple gift cards
-   Merge them into a single gift card
-   Use the new gift card as payment at checkout

The new gift card will have:

-   One gift card code
-   A total value equal to the combined balance of all merged gift cards

## Customer options after merging

After merging gift cards, the customer can choose to:

-   Copy the gift card code
-   Use the gift card directly at checkout
-   Receive the gift card code by email for later use

## Important to know

-   The original gift cards become invalid after merging
-   Gift cards can only be merged in the checkout
-   The feature applies to online payments only, not in-store payments
