Sometimes an image you open in the browser may not be rotated in the same way as the image you opened on your computer. This article will explain why this happens and how to rotate the image correctly.
Metadata and rotation
When you take a photo with a camera, metadata is stored along with the image file. Metadata is information about the information, and it includes things like the date, size, resolution, and rotation the photo had when it was taken. The rotation metadata value can be 0, 90, 180, or 270 degrees, and it indicates which way is originally pointing up.
To rotate a picture
To save the image in the correct rotation, it must be processed through an image editing program such as Photoshop or GIMP. GIMP is a free image editing program that you can download and use. When processing the image in such an application, all of the image's pixels will be rotated correctly, and the metadata storage will be updated so that the rotation will be correct on all devices.
How to use GIMP:
- Install and open GIMP on your computer.
- Click "File" and then select the desired image file by clicking "Open".
- When the image opens, you will be asked the following if rotation metadata is available in the image file: "According to the EXIF data, this image is rotated. Would you like GIMP to rotate it into the standard orientation?" Select "Rotate" in this case.
- Once the image is opened and any rotation has been corrected, press "File" and then "Export As" to export the image.
- You will be presented with a file picker that allows you to decide where to save the image and give it a new name. Also, select the file format for the export (recommended: PNG image (*.png)) at the bottom of the file picker.
- Now the exported image is ready for upload to the control panel or use in other contexts.
What if the image still rotated incorrectly after opening it in GIMP?
If the image is still rotated incorrectly after opening it in GIMP, you can use the following steps to rotate it correctly:
- Click "Image" in the menu bar of GIMP.
- Select "Transform" and then "Rotate 90 degrees clockwise" until the image rotates correctly.
- Check that the image is in the desired rotation and save it again by following the export process described earlier.
