Harmonized System code (HS)
An HS number is part of an internationally standardised system of names and numbers for classifying trade products – these codes are created and updated by the World Customs Organizations (WCO).
This system allows all countries to follow the same guidelines for classifying products before export and import. HS numbers can be referred to in more ways than one, depending on where the shipment is going and who is responsible for it – they are also referred to as HC, HTS, commodity numbers or tariffs, depending on the country.
It is important that importers and exporters worldwide can find the correct commodity number. This not only helps identify what kind of products are being shipped, but also plays an important role for tax systems and controls.
Here you can see how the HS number is displayed, and some other important points:
- The first 6 digits are the same in 183 countries.
- The rest of the digits are generally country-specific and define tax rates or other rates.
- European export declarations generally require 8 digits.
- European import declarations generally require 10 digits.
- U.S. declarations require 10 digits.
- The item description determines the HS number.
- The HS number, along with value and currency, determines customs duties and tax rates.
FedEx International Shipping Assist Lite helps you identify the Harmonised System (HS) number for your international shipments quickly and easily.
